When he retired after 36 years lecturing at Birkbeck, University of London, Francis Ames-Lewis was the Pevsner Professor of the History of Art. He studied medical sciences at the University of St Andrews before gaining an MA and PhD at the Courtauld Institute of Art.

He was Vice-Master, and Acting Master, of Birkbeck College. He served as Chairman of the Society for Renaissance Studies, and was Trustee of the Samuel Courtauld Trust. He is Vice-President of the Leonardo da Vinci Society, a Trustee of the Guild of Handicraft Trust, a Trustee and Treasurer of the William Hogarth Trust, and is Chairman of the Friends of St Nicholas  Church, Chiswick.
